Black Girl Math Tea Society: Building Confident Mathematicians This Summer

This summer, the Black Girl Math Tea Society is creating a space where young girls don’t just learn math—they experience success, confidence, and joy in it.

Designed specifically for rising 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Black girls, our tutoring program supports learners who may struggle with math by addressing the root causes of difficulty—not just the symptoms.

Because math struggles are not about ability—they are about how the brain processes information.

Why This Program Matters

Many girls begin to doubt their math abilities at an early age. By upper elementary school, they may:

  • Feel anxious during math tasks
  • Avoid participation
  • Struggle to keep up with multi-step problems
  • Lose confidence in their academic identity

The Black Girl Math Tea Society is here to interrupt that narrative.

We combine culturally affirming teaching, small group instruction, and brain-based strategies to help girls rebuild both skill and confidence.

Our Focus: Strengthening How the Brain Learns Math

Instead of only reteaching math content, we focus on four critical cognitive skill areas:

๐Ÿง  Working Memory

Working memory helps students hold and use information in real time.

In our sessions, girls will:

  • Practice chunking numbers and steps
  • Use math talk to explain thinking
  • Engage in “remember and solve” challenges

Activity Example:
“Sip & Solve ” – Students listen to a multi-step problem, hold the information, and solve collaboratively.

๐Ÿ‘€ Visual Processing

Visual processing allows students to interpret what they see in math—numbers, symbols, and patterns.

We strengthen this through:

  • Number lines and visual models
  • Color-coded problem solving
  • Pattern recognition games

Activity Example:
“Math Awareness” – Students design patterns and solve problems using visual models.

Processing Speed

Processing speed impacts how quickly and efficiently students can complete math tasks.

We support this by:

  • Practicing timed (but low-pressure) math challenges
  • Building automaticity with facts
  • Encouraging flexible thinking strategies

Activity Example:
“Beat the Clock (You vs. You)” – Students improve their own time, not compete with others.

๐Ÿงฎ Mental Math Strategies

Mental math builds number sense and confidence.

Students will learn to:

  • Break apart numbers (decomposing)
  • Use friendly numbers and estimation
  • Solve problems without always relying on paper

Activity Example:
“Tea Time Talk” – Students explain how they solved a problem mentally while enjoying a relaxed, social setting.
